【Objective】 To study the effects of grinding quality and manual technology on the basic mechanical properties of short and long axial compression rods made of 1 mm×6 mm bamboo strips. 【Method】 112 hollow box compression rods with section size of 6 mm×6 mm were fabricated by planning and grinding bamboo rods with different initial mass. The mass and ultimate bearing capacity of the hollow bar were tested, and the load-mass ratio was calculated. Finally, the influence of three different grinding processes on the mechanical properties of the bar was discussed. 【Result】 After grinding, the mass of the hollow short rod was reduced to 1/2 of the original, but the bearing capacity could reach 350 − 550 N,and the charge-mass ratio was above 560 N·g-1. 【Conclusion】 When selecting bamboo material in model making, the bamboo strip with small initial mass is selected for long rod and the bamboo strip with large initial mass is selected for short rod. The research results can provide reference for the selection and manufacture of rods in the national college students’ structural design competition.
